Over the last several years, we have repeatedly been hearing about all of the dangerous side effects of tanning. The news is always talking about skin cancer and warning us to stay covered up so we don’t catch the deadly disease. We are repeatedly warned to keep our skin protected and to stay out of the sun. But, is the sun really that terrible for us? How could something that helps make life possible also be such a danger to us?

The sun is our primary natural source of UV radiation. However there are several artificial sources including tanning booths, black lights, curing lamps, halogen lights, fluorescent and incandescent sources, and some types of lasers. Unique hazards apply to the different sources depending on the wavelength range of the emitted UV radiation. The sun though is probably the greatest source of UV radiation for most of us.
